Are we trying to commit suicide as a species?

Political posts really aren’t my thing, but I feel furious about what is going on in the Conservative party

I recently read a post on Medium by Umair Haique about Climate Change. It’s extremely worrying. (I tried to post a link, but it’s a member only story and the link didn’t work.)

The gist of it is that we are rapidly coming to the point where humans cannot survive. It’s not only about the air temperature, but also what is known as ‘wet bulb temperature’ that takes humidity into account. At much lower temperatures than have previously been thought, humans can no longer cool themselves by evaporation of sweat because the air has too much water in it, so we quickly die. Temperatures below the 40+ we’ve seen in recent months.

Yes. I know you are going to say that people have survived those temperatures, but those temperatures we’ve been reading about are not wet bulb temperatures.

As we all know, Climate Change is caused largely by the burning of fossil fuels. (Can we really afford to burn these, anyway? But that’s another post in the future.) Yet the British Government is set to allow many more (hundreds, according to the Independent) licences for North Sea oil and gas. Cumbria council approved of the development of a new coalfield recently, although the government is to hold an inquiry beginning on September 7th.

Rishi Sunak has also promised to look into the Low Emission Zones put in place in many British cities. In these areas, people with high polluting vehicles have to pay to enter the zones. It’s a daily charge in London.

Sunak has said that it’s a declaration of war on the motorist. In 2013 a nine year old girl living in London had a massive asthma attack that cost her her life. The coroner declared that it was caused by pollution. She was the first person to have this on her death certificate. Does the Prime Minister want more children to die from pollution caused by cars?

There is a suggestion that a new coal field may be opened in Cumbria. The council has given the go ahead, but the government is launching an enquiry in September.

The government has also granted hundreds (according to The Independent) of licences to search for more oil under the North Sea.

Have they not considered that as the planet warms, more areas will become uninhabitable. What happens to the people there? They will move north (or south in the southern hemisphere) causing serious overcrowding, and probable wars. We all know the dangers of wars.

I don’t think that the government is taking any of this seriously. In my opinion, politicians are only interested in winning the next election, and business people in how much money they can make. Forget the fact that our survival is at stake here. And the survival of most other life forms on the planet.

  1. But I bet everybody isn’t bothered when they set off for the Airport to board a plane to travel away from their beautiful country to swelter on a foreign beach!
    BAN AIR TRAVEL!!

    1. I rarely use air travel, preferring to go by land. You actually see more of the world that way. We drove from the UK to Croatia .Took us several days, but we passed through France, Austria, Italy, Slovenia and Bosnia-Hertzogovena.
I don’t think it should be banned entirely, but it is far too cheap, making it possible for nearly everyone to fly. If it were expensive, people would think twice.
When the unpronounceable volcano erupted in Iceland, all flights were stopped worldwide for a while. We were in France, on the Loire. The sky was cloudless for a few days. Flights restarted during our stay. The day they restarted, there were vapour trails in the sky, and lots of clouds. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

      1. I applaud you! Unfortunately people like to get places FAST and have enough money and that useful little plastic card which seems to be able to buy them the moon should they want it and think nothing of purchasing airfares whether expensive or not.
While air travel remains available to the masses there will be planes polluting our skies and reducing our ability to breathe with Summers getting hotter and hotter and more disastrous weather worldwide. When will the greedy masses wake up and know that a foreign holiday isn’t the best holiday!

        1. Banning air travel isn’t practical, though. There is the need to transport food around the world. Oh, I know we can grow our own stuff here, and I’m all for using local stuff, but in the cases of places where food cannot easily be grown, it probably needs to be flown there.

        2. Probably you are right. We must have Strawberries in Winter, Tomatoes all year round and a myriad of foods out of season and these have to be transported quickly so they arrive in optimum condition.
Unfortunately air travel is here to stay. We have moved too far down that path for there to be change. But it is still the biggest cause of modern pollution. As are Rockets to the Moon with their dumping of the waste products in the atmosphere. Us humans are masters at polluting our world and beyond.

        3. You are correct. I think we should eat whatever is in season. I remember the excitement of strawberry time. They were only available for a few weeks in early summer, and were an extra special treat. Now they are just another fruit to have whenever we want.

  2. Sadly, it doesn’t seem possible for society as a whole to be swayed to turn away from greed and consumption right away. However, maybe if we individually change our lives to make a difference, we can inspire other individuals to do the same, and they can inspire others and so on. Maybe then we can start making a difference together.
